This is a one-of-a kind handcrafted item. What you see in the pictures is exactly what you will receive.

This listing is for a single set of bookmatched, stabilized, Red Dyed Spalted Maple Burl knife scales, which has been discounted as it did not meet our quality standards. Each scale measures approximately 3/8" x 1-7/8"W x 6"L, but one scale has some bark and a large chunk missing (as shown in the photos). They would still make a nice bookmatched set, if you are making a smaller knife handle or could use it for some other project. The spalting of the wood (caused by the initial stages of decomposition) adds very interesting and unique color variations and designs.

These scales were stabilized using red dyed cactus juice stabilizing resin, which is considered the best stabilizing resin on the market. After thoroughly drying the wood it was placed under vacuum to remove all of the air, after which the resin is given several days to fully penetrate the wood, and then they are cured.

Although these scales were spalted, and thus soft/brittle initially, the stabilizing process makes then very solid and strong. There may be some slight superficial pits in the wood, but otherwise they will be very solid. Any pits can be filled with CA glue.

Some of the pictures may show the scales after wetting with oils in order to give you an idea of the final color when finished. There are also some pictures of the raw wood to show what it will look like when you receive it.

The scales have been milled to the size and surfaced to the extent shown, but they are not sanded or polished, since they will be finished as part of the knifemaking process.
